Mammoth fossil remains. Illustration of the partially unearthed fossil of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) found in Berezovka in north-eastern Siberia. This mammoth broke a leg and hip bone after falling into a crevasse. The trunk was eaten by wolves. The skull is at upper centre, with the front legs at lower left and lower right. The woolly mammoth was a large, elephant-like mammal with a thick, hairy coat. It lived on the steppes of Siberia and in much of Europe up until about 10, 000 years ago. Woolly mammoths died out as Eurasia warmed up at the end of the last ice age, forests spread across the steppes. Human hunting hastened their extinction. | |
