Palaeoloxodon antiquus (left) and Palaeoloxodon falconeri (right), illustration. These extinct prehistoric mammals are examples of species of the straight-tusked elephant. Fossils of P. antiquus have been found in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Fossils of the dwarf elephant P. falconeri have been found in Sicily and Malta. P. antiquus reached 4 metres in height. It existed during the Pleistocene, from 781, 000 to 50, 000 years ago. P. falconeri reached around a metre in height. It is thought to have gone extinct around 3000 years ago. | |
