PLGA microspheres, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). PLGA (poly(lactic-co-glycolic) acid) is a copolymer used in a variety of biomedical devices such as grafts, sutures, implants, prosthetic devices, and micro and nanoparticles for drug delivery. PLGA is particularly well suited to these uses as a result of its biodegradability and biocompatibility. It breaks down in the body to produce lactic acid and glycolic acid, both of which occur naturally in the body. A PLGA drug delivery device is currently used for the treatment of prostate cancer.
