Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, illustration. This space observatory was formerly known as the Gamma-ray Large Area Space Telescope, or GLAST. Fermi will study high-energy phenomena such as supermassive black holes and gamma ray bursts from a low Earth orbit. Fermi was launched on 11 June 2008 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. It orbits the Earth at an altitude of 550 kilometres. A gamma ray is shown impacting one of the detector. | |
