Planet PSO J318.5-22 space tourism poster. Discovered in October 2013, PSO J318.5-22 is a rogue planet, which does not orbit a star. It is approximately 80 light-years away, and belongs to the Beta Pictoris moving group. Estimated temperatures inside its clouds of hot dust and molten iron exceed 1, 100 Kelvin. It is thought that rogue planets may be either failed stars or planets ejected from very young systems after an encounter with another planet. Rogue planets glow faintly from the heat of their formation, but having no star nearby, exist in a continuous night. | |
