Trieste II submersible, 1964. Floating crane lifting the Trieste II (DSV-1) submersible during launching ceremonies. This bathyscape was placed in the water at San Diego, California, USA, on 16 January 1964. A bathyscape is a free-diving self-propelled deep-sea submersible that uses a pressurised cabin suspended below a float. This bathyscape reused the original pressure sphere from its precursor Trieste I. Trieste II was 20 metres in length, carried a crew of two, and could reach depths of 6, 100 metres. It was in use until 1980, and is now preserved at the Naval Undersea Museum. | |
