Lagoon and Trifid nebulae, optical image. The Lagoon Nebula (M8, NGC 6523) is the larger nebula at centre, and has some dark nebulae crossing it. The Trifid Nebula (M20, NGC 6514) is the small nebula (pink/blue) at upper right. These nebulae are found in the constellation of Sagittarius, around 4100 and 5200 light years from Earth respectively. Nebulae are clouds of gas and dust in space, many light years across. They are called emission nebulae when the hydrogen gas is ionised by nearby stars and emits light. Reflection nebulae reflect and scatter light. Nebulae contain the materials to form new stars and planets. | |
