Illustration of the prehistoric mammal Andrewsarchus mongoliensis with prey. This carnivorous ungulate (hoofed-animal) lived during the Middle Eocene epoch (about 45 million years ago) in what is now Inner Mongolia. Only a single fossil skull has been found, measuring 83 centimetres long and 56 centimetres wide. Based on this it is predicted that A mongoliensis measured 1.8 metres high at the shoulder and 3.4 metres in length. It would have weighed just over one tonne. | |
