Water repellency is defined as the resistance to the absorption or passage of water. Another term for it is hydrophobicity. It may occur on the surface of many materials or fabrics (even soft and permeable) and typically results in the formation of rounded and coherent water drops. Familiar examples are seen on plant leaves and bird feathers. Industrial materials, most notably fabrics, can be made water repellent (hydrophobe) by coatings that are most often fluoro-polymer based. Wax and fats also enhance water repellence. | |
