Stroke brain damage. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan through the brain of a 70-year-old man with damage (dark area at upper right) caused by a stroke (cerebrovascular accident, CVA). This area of damage is in the brain's left hemisphere, and affects the right-hand side of the body. A stroke is where the brain is damaged due to hypoxia (lack of oxygen). This is usually due to an interruption or other damage to the blood supply, such as a burst blood vessel or a clot blocking the blood flow to the brain.
