Magnetic anomaly, lithospheric magnetic field. Close-up of the Earth with a projection of magnetic data collected by the Swarm satellites operated by the European Space Agency (ESA). The area shown here is in Africa, with the red area (a magnetic anomaly) in the region of Bangui, capital of the Central African Republic. The model used here shows the tiny magnetic signals (measured in hundreds of nanoTesla) produced by Earth's outer layer (the lithosphere). The cause of this anomaly is unknown, but one possible explanation is the remains of a meteorite impact some 540 million years ago. This dataset combines Swarm data with historical data from the German CHAMP satellite. Red represents areas where the lithospheric magnetic field is positive, while blue show areas where it is negative. Image published in 2017. | |
