Acute (neovascular) glaucoma in the eye of an 85-year-old female patient. The patient previously lost the sight in this eye as a result of temporal arteritis. Neovascular glaucoma (NVG) is a severe form of glaucoma, where increased pressure in the anterior chamber of the eye causes damage. Normal intraocular pressure (IOP) is between 10 mmHg (millimetres of mercury) and 20 mmHg. In this patient IOP was 60mmHg. Temporal or giant-cell arteritis, which caused the original blindness, is an inflammatory disease of blood vessels, most commonly involving arteries of the head. The most serious complication is occlusion of the ophthalmic artery which supplies blood to the eye. | |
