Bunion, or hallux valgus, (right), and gout in the third toe of a 73-year-old man. A bunion is a deformity characterised by sideways deviation of the big toe, creating a protruding joint between the toe and the metatarsal bone. Gout is a condition in which crystals of uric acid are deposited inside joints, usually due to high blood levels of uric acid (hyperpuricaemia). This is an extremely painful condition, which leads to swelling of the joint. Treatment is with painkilling drugs, and colchicine can also be taken to reduce the severity of an attack. | |
