Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Longhorn crazy ant (Paratrechina longicornis). The longhorn crazy ant (Paratrechina longicornis) is a species of small dark-colored insect in the family Formicidae. Paratrechina longicornis (also known as Formica longicornis) are often called crazy ants, because instead of following straight lines, they dash around very erratically. This ant occurs in large numbers in homes or outdoors. They often forage long distances away from their nests so nests are often difficult to control. P. longicornis is a general scavenger and also tends honeydew producing Homoptera. Nests contain accumulations of dry litter or mulch.
