Geological map of the USA. 19th-century map of the United States of America, with state boundaries and colour-coded by rock types and ages. The key to the colours is at lower left, and ranks the rock types by geologic age. The order from earliest to most recent is: Eozoic (Precambrian), Cambrian and Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian, Triassic and Jurassic, Cretaceous and Tertiary. The most recent rocks are alluvium (recently laid sediments) and deposits from volcanic eruptions. The map was compiled by US geologists Charles Henry Hitchcock (1836-1919) and William Phipps Blake (1826-1910). The map was published in New York in 1874 as part of a statistical atlas of the United States. | |
