Charles Barkla (1877-1944). Caricature of the British physicist Charles Glover Barkla. Barkla is best known for being awarded the 1917 Nobel Prize in Physics for his discovery that elements could be characterised by their X-ray spectrum. He studied under Oliver Lodge at Liverpool University, and worked with J. J. Thomson at Cambridge University. After 1902, he mostly studied the newly discovered X-rays (Roentgen radiation) and discovered that they, like light, could be polarised. | |
