Richard Owen (1804-1892). Illustration of the British anatomist and palaeontologist Richard Owen. Owen was the founder and first director of the Natural History Museum, London, UK. He became an expert in comparative anatomy and did extensive research on fossils and dinosaurs. Initially bitterly opposed to Darwin's theory of evolution through natural selection, he subsequently changed his views as Darwin's ideas became widely accepted. Owen was knighted in 1884. | |
