Tesla coil experiment. Electrical streamers sparking outwards from a large Tesla coil at the laboratory operated by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. The photographer (Dickson Alley) is seated at lower centre. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899 to 1900. The voltage used here is 12 million volts. The coil named after Tesla is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla's research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour. | |
