Viking longship, illustration. The Viking longships were long, narrow and light wooden boats. They had a shallow hull that increased their speed and allowed the Vikings to navigate shallow coastal waters and carry out beach landings. The longships were powered by sail and oars. They were used for long distance trade and commerce, as well as raids. This is a snekker ('snake'), the longest ship used in Viking expeditions. At lower right is an inset showing the structure that holds the mast, along with the arrangement of the timbers below deck. The Viking Age lasted from the 8th to 11th centuries, with the Vikings expanding and raiding from Scandinavia and other areas of Northern Europe. | |
