Illustration of early Homo sapiens (modern humans) in what is now the Willandra Lakes Region, New South Wales, Australia, performing a burial ritual. This scene is based on the Lake Mungo 3 remains, found in 1974. A male skeleton (known as Mungo Man), around 50 years of age, was found sprinkled with red ochre. The remains date to 40, 000 years ago, making this is the earliest known example of such a sophisticated burial ritual. | |
