Melba Roy (1929-1990), US mathematician, with an IBM computer. Roy started work at NACA (the predecessor to NASA) as a human computer. Roy headed a group of NASA mathematicians who tracked the Echo satellites (1960 and 1964), producing the orbital element timetables by which millions viewed the satellites as they passed overhead. NASA and NACA (the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) used human computers in aerospace and flight research to transcribe and handle raw data. As technology progressed, both human and electronic computers were used to process and handle data. Photographed in the 1960s. | |
