Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of dog flea (Ctenocephalides canis) front legs. The fleas live as ectoparasites on a variety of mammals, particularly domestic dogs and cats. They may occasionally bite humans, but cannot breed without their preferred host. The flea has 6 legs which end in strong claws designed to grasp the host and prevent dislodgment. Long hind legs make the flea capable of jumps of an average distance of 30 centimetres and an average height of 15.5 cm. Once on an animal, the flea moves around exclusively by walking.
