This late first century marble statue of Mars, the Roman God of War.Based on the Augustan original tit was worshipped in the Temple of Mars Ultor in the imperial forum of Augustus. At 3.6m high, the statue is twice life-size. Up to the 18th century it had been believed to depict the Greek king of Epirus, Pyrrhus. The Romans named five of the planets after the most important gods and named the visibly red planet Mars, the God of War. | |
