Illustration depicting how light pollution dilutes the night sky depending on environment. On the left is the most extreme case, the view from a city centre. Even on a cloudless night few stars are visible except the brightest; the band of the Milky Way is practically invisible. From a suburban sky (panel 2), the view is somewhat better. The Milky Way is now visible along with some fainter stars. Panel 3 shows the view from a rural location, such as in the middle of the countryside. The Milky Way and stars are now very prominent. From the darkest possible location (e.g. a mountain observatory with no Moon) the view is exceedingly rich. So many stars are visible that the constellations become harder to spot, as they are lost among a sea of stars. | |
