Light micrograph of the intermediate lobe, or pars intermedia, of a human pituitary gland. It is located between the anterior lobe (left) and the posterior lobe (right). In humans it is poorly developed. It contains a series of vesicles and cysts that are the result of the fragmentation of Rathke's primitive pouch. Nests of basophilic cells extending into the posterior lobe are also seen. This is the so-called basophil invasion of the posterior lobe, a frequent change that appears in the human pituitary gland with age. Magnification: x90 when printed at 10 centimetres across. | |
