Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis), is Chinese in origin. The shoots of this giant grass can be eaten and the culm or stalk is processed into a fibre that is three times stronger than cotton, wool, rayon, or polyester. The adult culms change colour with exposure and weather. The largest bamboo acclimatized to Europe, it can reach 25 meters growing up to 24cm a day with a diameter at the base of 13cm. Sometimes known as Phyllostachys pubescens because the young culm is covered in hair like pruina. Bamboo is being developed in China for a number of industries from building materials to microchips, fabrics to food. Photographed in La Bambouseraie of Cevennes, France. | |
