Prized by sports fishermen for its fighting spirit, the Atlantic Tarpon - Megalops atlanticus - is an inedible sport fish reaching lengths of 2.5 meters and 150 kilo. They tolerate a wide range of salinity levels in the coastal habitat where they hunt fish like sardines and grey and, as juveniles, they can enter fresh waters. The swim bladder, which acts as a primitive lung, can be filled with air gulped at the surface which may be required in anoxic environments around shallow estuaries, mangrove forests, salt marshes or hard-bottom/seagrass communities of the Keys. They inhabit the coasts of eastern Americas and part of west Africa. Aquarium La Rochelle, France | |
