Honey bees - Apis mellifera - a colonial honey producing bee. Bees swarm as a natural process of expansion by seeking a new place to establish a nest or hive when threatened with overcrowding. A queen will lead around 60% of the workers, deserting the hive and establishing a new colony. This is called swarming. Swarming bees will seek a cavity in a tree or rock but occasionally swarms will utilize a man made cavity like this post box. Bee keepers will try to deter swarming by splitting the hives before overcrowding becomes a problem. Quince Honey Farm, South Molton, Devon, UK | |
