Kidney and adrenal gland, illustration. The kidneys (of which there are two) perform a vital role in cleaning the blood. They filter waste products such as urea (a nitrogenous waste) and excrete the urea in the form of urine. The urine drains to the bladder (not seen). On the top of each kidney is an adrenal gland (upper left), seen here in sectioned view. This gland produces adrenaline (epinephrine), along with other hormones. Adrenaline is best-known for being produced as part of the flight-or-fight response. Four layers of the adrenal gland are shown here, from outer to inner: the glomerulosa (aldosterone), the fasciculata (cortisol and cortisone), the reticularis (oestrogens and tetosterone), and the medulla (epinephrine and norepinephrine). | |
