Mars and ALMA radio telescope antenna. ALMA antenna set against a backdrop of the night sky. The planet Mars (orange) is the bright object at upper left. Nearby (also orange) is the bright star Antares. The Milky Way in Scorpius is at right and Saturn (white) is just visible near the antenna. ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array) is an array of 66 radio antennas located at an elevation of 5000 metres on the arid Chajnantor plateau in the Chilean Andes. Data from the separate antennas is combined by interferometry, making it one of the most powerful telescopes in the world. Observations began in 2011. The array has been fully operational since March 2013. Photographed in April 2016. | |
