Rounded boulders in the foreground mark the level of a raised beach on Phippsoya, Svalbard, Norway. The boulders were rounded by wave action when still in contact with the Arctic Ocean. The uplift of the land is due to the rebounding of the Earth's crust in response to the loss of heavy ice age glaciers. Terraces on the base of the mountain in the background are also raised beaches. | |
