Meltwater from a glacier cascading over a cliff of dolerite. Dolerite is a mass of molten magma that intruded between layers of limestone from the carboniferous period. Some of the snow and ice is stained red (forming so-called pink snow) by Chlamydomonas nivalis, an algae that thrives under cold conditions. Photographed in Spitsbergen, Svalbard. | |
