Interacting galaxies. Composite ALMA-HST image of the interacting galaxies IC 2163 (left) and NGC 2207 (right). This has produced a rare eye-like structure as seen from Earth. The two galaxies are around 114 million light years from Earth, in the constellation of Canis Major. IC 2163 is passing behind NGC 2207. The interaction has triggered phases of renewed star formation. Image published in 2016. The image is a composite of radio observations from the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) and optical observations from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). | |
