Meteor in Orion in 1904, stereoscopic card. These are paired stereoscopic images which provide a 3D image (stereogram) when viewed side-by-side. The meteor (streak of light at lower centre in each image) was estimated to be about 145 kilometres above the Earth's surface. The three bright stars forming a line at upper centre in each image are the belt of the constellation of Orion. The bright spot at centre in the images is the Great Nebula. The star at right in the images is Rigel (Beta Orionis). The star near the meteor is Saiph (Kappa Orionis). Image obtained on 15 November 1904, by US astronomer Edward Emerson Barnard (1857-1923) assisted by Frank Sullivan at the Yerkes Observatory, Chicago, USA. Published by the Keystone View Company. | |
