Ruptured Baker's cyst. Close-up of the knees of an 83-year-old male patient affected by Baker's cysts, where the right knee (right) is swollen due to the cyst and the cyst in the left knee (left) has ruptured. Baker's, or popliteal, cysts are fluid-filled lumps behind the knees, caused by the build-up of pressure within the knee joint. They are often a complication of a disorder such as rheumatoid arthritis. The cysts can rupture (as here), causing great pain. Treatment is with drainage of the fluid and anti-inflammatory drugs. | |
