Nikola Tesla's birthplace. Historical image of the house of the Teslas and the Orthodox church in the village of Smiljan in what was then the Austrian Empire and is today in Croatia. This village was the birthplace of Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943). His father Milutin Tesla (1819-1879) was a Serbian orthodox priest at this church, and the family lived in the house next door. Milutin Tesla and his wife Duka had five children (two sons and three daughters). Nikola Tesla was their fourth child. Milutin Tesla died in 1879, and in 1884 Nikola Tesla emigrated to the USA where he made key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. A type of transformer is named for him (the Tesla Coil), as is the SI unit of magnetic flux density. | |
