Tesla coil experiment. Electrical streamers sparking outwards from a large Tesla coil at the laboratory operated by Serb-US physicist and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) at Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA. Tesla operated this laboratory from 1899. The coil named after him is a type of resonant transformer that is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating current electricity. Tesla emigrated to the USA in 1884. His research led to key advances in areas such as alternating current power generation and transmission. The SI unit of magnetic flux density is named in his honour. | |
