ISS astronauts and blood experiment. US astronaut Tim Kopra (born 1963, left) drawing blood from British astronaut Tim Peake (born 1972, right) on the International Space Station (ISS) during their six-month mission. This was Peake's first sample for the Canadian Marrow experiment, looking at how bone marrow and blood cell production are affected by living in the free-fall, microgravity environment of Earth orbit. Astronauts often take samples of blood, saliva and urine for researchers to analyse on Earth. Peake was representing the European Space Agency (ESA) and Kopra was representing NASA. They were on the ISS from 15 December 2015 to 18 June 2016 as part of Expedition 46 and Expedition 47. Photograph published on 23 March 2016. | |
