Ringed plover (Charadrius hiaticula) with 1-day-old newly hatched chick. This bird's hatchlings leave the nest soon after hatching. The plants seen here are sea holly (Eryngium maritimum) and marram (Ammophila) grass. Ringed plovers commonly breed in open ground on beaches or flats across northern Eurasia and in Arctic northeast Canada. They are wading birds, and forage in coastal and wetland areas for insects, crustaceans and worms. Photographed in June, in Denbighshire, Wales. | |
