Curtiss pusher aircraft. US aviation and motorcycle pioneer Glenn Curtiss taking off from a beach in his Curtiss Model D 'Curtiss Pusher' aircraft. Curtiss produced over 500 inventions, including the motorcycle handlebar throttle control and the first private aircraft in the USA. The Curtiss Pusher was an early US pusher aircraft with the engine and propeller behind the pilot's seat. It was among the very first aircraft in the world to be built in any quantity and was the first aircraft type to take off from and land on the deck of a ship. He made the first seaplane (hydroaeroplane) and invented retractable landing gear for aircraft. Photographed at Cedar Point, Ohio, USA, in 1910. | |
