Edward Whitehouse (1816-1890. 1868 illustration of the English surgeon and electrical engineer Edward Orange Wildman Whitehouse. Whitehouse was recruited by entrepreneur Cyrus West Field as Chief Electrician to work on the attempt to lay the first transatlantic telegraph cable for the Atlantic Telegraph Company between western Ireland and eastern Newfoundland. He subsequently sent the first telegraph communication on 16th August 1858 to the USA. However, he was ultimately held responsible for the failure of the cable after he applied higher voltages in an effort to boost declining signals. | |
