Clara Louise Maass (1876-1901), American nurse. During the Spanish-American War, Maass volunteered as a nurse for the United States Army. She was posted to Cuba where she volunteered for an experiment conducted by Walter Reed into the causes and transmission of yellow fever. She contracted the disease, recovered, and volunteered again, but died after contracting the disease as second time. The experiments were successful in identifying the mosquito as the vector of yellow fever. | |
