Perseid meteor over Yosemite. Composite images of Perseid meteors (streaks of light) burning up in the Earth's atmosphere, seen above Yosemite National Park in California, USA. Meteor showers occur regularly each year when the Earth crosses the orbit of cometary debris. The Perseid shower is associated with the Swift-Tuttle comet, reaching its peak around 12 August each year. The Half Dome and El Capitan peaks are in the foreground, with the Pleiades (the Seven Sisters) at centre in the night sky. This composite consists of 12 superimposed frames obtained over 20 minutes on 12 August 2016. | |
