Atacama salt flat and Licancabur volcano. This stratovolcano is in Chile. It reaches an elevation of 5916 metres. NASA astrobiologists have studied the extreme bacterial life found in this volcano's crater lake (Licancabur Lake), one of the world's highest lakes. In the foreground is part of the Salar de Atacama, the largest salt flat in Chile. Salt flats are deposits of salts and other minerals left behind by evaporating waters in arid climates. | |
