Vineyard with protective walls. The black volcanic soil found here on Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands, is being used to grow grape vines. Walls have been built to protect the vines from the hot prevailing wind. The walls also reduce wind erosion of the soil. Volcanic soil is good for growing vines as it is rich in nutrients and also absorbs dew and moisture. In the background is a dragon tree (Dracaena draco). Photographed near Masdache, Lanzarote, Canary Islands. | |
