Taung Child killed by eagle. Illustration of a prehistoric eagle with its hominin child prey in its talons. This is an Australopithecus africanus child. A. africanus is one of several extinct species forming an early part of the human evolutionary tree. A famous A. africanus fossil, the Taung Child skull (Taung 1), dates from 2.5 million years ago. It was discovered in 1924 in Taung, South Africa, by Raymond Dart. It is thought the child was 3 years old at the time of death, and was killed by an eagle. | |
