Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Horn fly head (Haematobia irritans). Horn flies resemble house flies but are half the size and have blood-sucking mouthparts. Both male and female horn flies are blood feeders. They usually feed on cattle, but will feed on other domestic animals including horses, sheep, and goats. Adult horn flies spend their entire lives on a host. Females leave only to lay their eggs in fresh manure. Despite this, horn flies are not known to transmit disease.
