Light micrograph (LM) of Actinomycin (antibiotic) crystals. Actinomycin is an antibiotic of the actinomycin group (also called Actinomycin D), produced and isolated from the soil bacteria (actinobacterium, actinomycete bacterium) of the genus Streptomyces. It is used as an antineoplastic agent in the treatment of certain cancers. Actinomycin was the first antibiotic reported to be able to halt cancer; however, it is not widely used to treat cancers because it is highly toxic to humans, interfering with the genetic material of cells. It is mainly used as an investigative tool in cell biology. Magnification: X40 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
