Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Brachyspira pilosicoli, anaerobic, Gram-negative, spirillum bacterium (prokaryote). Brachyspira pilosicoli formerly known as Serpulina pilosicoli belongs in the order to the order Spirochaetaceae. Brachyspira sp. are common spirochetes. B. pilosicoli causes intestinal or colonic spirochetosis, a mild colitis and diarrhoea in pigs and poultry. Spirochetes lack a rigid cell wall and move by flexing of the cell producing a spiral action. B. pilosicoli also is a common organism in developing countries and among immuno-suppressed human patients. The significance in causing disease in humans has been more prevalent in the past decade, especially with diarrhoea and wasting.
