Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Micrococcus antarcticus, psychrophilic (cold tolerant) bacterium. M. antarcticus was isolated in Antarctic pockets of very salty brine water surrounded by sea ice. M. antarcticus is a Gram-positive, aerobic, coccoid actinobacterium that can tolerate extremely cold water with temperatures as low as 0 degree centigrade. It is important in bioremediation, as it is capable of degrading sewage at low temperatures. Magnification: x5, 335 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres. | |
